Introduction: From Hunan to Toronto: Hong Wei Liao was born in Hunan, China. Today, she calls Toronto home. Her journey has taken her across countries and cultures. Along the way, she built a life focused on helping others. She now leads the Botrich Family Wealth Heritage and Development Center, where she helps high-net-worth families think about more than just money.
“I believe legacy is about what we leave in people, not just what we leave to them,” she told me.
A Foundation of Education and Family
Liao holds a master’s degree. She raised five children—some in business, some in education, and even one in beauty pageants. But for her, family isn’t only about blood.
“Every child deserves a chance to shine,” she said. “We must guide them with values, not just opportunities.”
That belief inspired her to support young people across North America through mentoring, scholarships, and education programs.
Building Botrich
As an investor and designer, Liao helped create Botrich Inc., a company focused on family wealth and legacy. Its Toronto office connects clients across Canada, the U.S., and China.
Botrich isn’t just about managing money. It’s also a place where people learn about health, law, taxes, and giving back. Events often feature speakers from many fields—finance, wellness, law, and more.
Supporting Women and Girls
Liao has long supported programs for women’s leadership. She was named Life Honorary Chair of the North America United Global Women’s Association, and she continues to sponsor women’s events and awards.
In 2024, she received the Global Women of Excellence Award—her second time getting the honor. She also holds the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the King Charles III Coronation Medal, both for community service.
She doesn’t seek attention. Her philosophy is simple: “Leadership is about serving quietly. Not showing off, but showing up.”
Passion for Youth Development
One of Liao’s proudest efforts is her support for the Canada Youth Funding Association (CYFA). She helps organize galas, lectures, and mentorship programs through CYFA.
Helping the Next Generation
She doesn’t just support students. She mentors young entrepreneurs, too. One of her mentees is working on a global 3D technology startup preparing for IPO. She stays in touch with many of them over the years.
“Mentorship is a long journey,” she told me. “It’s not about giving advice. It’s about listening and walking beside someone.”
She has also worked closely with UNICEF Canada, supporting programs in Ecuador and The Gambia focused on education and child safety.
Finding Purpose in Arts and Culture
Another area close to her heart is the arts. For over 17 years, she’s supported youth dance programs in Vancouver, especially the annual “Dancing Passion” gala. The show includes Chinese dance, K-pop, ballet, and more.
“It’s not about perfection. It’s about giving kids the confidence to express who they are,” she said.
She believes that art builds self-esteem and helps kids grow into leaders. She sees it as a way to connect cultures and communities.
A Global Outlook with Local Roots
Liao’s work spans many borders—China, Canada, and the U.S. Yet, she remains deeply tied to local communities. Whether it’s giving a speech in Vancouver or hosting a youth banquet in Toronto, she stays grounded in service.
In 2025, she was crowned WORLD MADAM Honorary Champion and Global Peace Ambassador. The award recognizes her efforts to empower women and promote peace through dialogue and shared understanding.
Still, she remains modest.
“I’ve been lucky to meet many great people. I just try to do my part,” she said.
Final Thoughts
Talking with Hong Wei Liao is like sitting down with a quiet force. She isn’t loud. She isn’t flashy. But her work speaks volumes.
Through mentorship, leadership, and philanthropy, she’s touched thousands of lives. Her story is one of steady, thoughtful action.
