The Hartford announced a major leadership succession plan today. The company board selected President A. Morris “Mo” Tooker as the next chief executive officer. Tooker will step into the CEO role on March 1, 2027. Meanwhile, current chief executive Christopher Swift will transition to executive chair on the same date. Tooker will also join the board on October 1, 2026. Therefore, the insurer ensures a smooth transition while keeping strong operational momentum across all divisions.
“This thoughtful succession plan ensures a seamless transition, preserving strategic continuity, business momentum and operational strength,” said Trevor Fetter, lead independent director of The Hartford’s Board of Directors. “Respected throughout the insurance industry, Mo combines strategic vision with disciplined execution. He has consistently delivered profitable growth, advanced customer-centered innovation, upheld underwriting rigor and built strong, aligned teams. He is ideally suited to lead as CEO and guide The Hartford’s next chapter.”
Leadership Experience and Proven Track Record
Tooker first joined The Hartford in 2015 as chief underwriting officer. Consequently, he advanced through senior executive roles over eleven years. As president, he directed enterprise strategy and business execution across all key segments. Moreover, Tooker expanded risk-mitigation services to protect commercial clients. He also improved underwriting discipline and fostered internal collaboration across teams.
“I am excited and inspired to lead The Hartford during this time of extraordinary opportunity,” Tooker said. “As a result of Chris’ tremendous vision and leadership, we are exceptionally well-positioned for the future with financial strength, a disciplined strategy and an unwavering commitment to excellence. With our competitive advantages, talented teams and focus on innovation, we are poised to excel and create lasting value for all our stakeholders.”
A Transformational Tenure at The Hartford
Swift leaves a notable legacy at The Hartford after nearly thirteen years as CEO. Under his strategic guidance, net income ROE more than tripled. The company’s stock price also rose more than eightfold during his tenure. He also invested in insurance technology and broadened product lines nationwide. Furthermore, Swift strengthened the capital structure while driving sustainable growth.
“On behalf of the board, I would like to express our deep gratitude for Chris’ leadership. He has made a profound impact on The Hartford, the insurance industry and communities across the country,” Fetter said. “His enduring legacy includes market-leading financial results, a high-performance culture and a leadership style grounded in empathy and putting people first.”
Strategic Continuity and Transition Oversight
As executive chair, Swift will guide board governance and advise the new CEO. As a result, the management transition remains structured and seamless. He will also remain actively involved in local initiatives. Swift plans to retire from the executive chair role in late 2027.
“It has been an honor to serve as CEO of this iconic company,” Swift said. “I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together, elevating The Hartford to new levels of success and sustaining strong performance. Mo is an outstanding leader, remarkable person and a trusted industry authority. The strength of our succession planning and depth of talent across the organization gives me the utmost confidence in The Hartford’s bright future.”
