James F. Comley’s remarkable journey began over 70 years ago after his service in the Navy. Starting as a mechanic’s helper, he quickly became captivated by the mechanical precision and significance of elevators in modern infrastructure. This early fascination laid the foundation for a career built on expertise, leadership, and unwavering dedication to safety and mentorship.

In 1973, James and his wife, Virginia, acquired Embree Elevator with the vision of creating a trusted, full-service elevator company. Their approach centered on public safety, system reliability, and personalized service. Under James’s guidance, the company evolved from millwright roots into a leading regional provider of elevator maintenance and service.

James steered Embree through decades of technological advancements, regulatory changes, and economic shifts—always rooted in a deep commitment to quality and people. His bold decision to shift the company’s focus from millwright work to complete elevator solutions played a pivotal role in its growth.

Beyond Embree, James left a significant mark on the industry through over 20 years of service on the Massachusetts Board of Elevator Regulations, becoming Chairman in 2006. He championed safety standards and mentored countless professionals, earning widespread respect for both his technical acumen and civic dedication.

His passion for storytelling and craftsmanship led him to co-found the Elevator Museum, an institution preserving the history of vertical transportation. Even in his 90s, he visits job sites, mentoring young technicians and sharing knowledge earned over decades.

James and Virginia’s commitment to preservation extended to restoring the historic Elijah Stearns Mansion in Bedford, MA—a home celebrated in Architectural Digest and across New England for its architectural significance and craftsmanship.

Recognized with the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2011, James also endowed a major scholarship at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, supporting future tradespeople and innovators.

Looking ahead, James remains focused on guiding Embree Elevator to new heights while nurturing future generations. Through the Elevator Museum and his hands-on mentorship, he continues to shape the industry he helped build.
