Afya Limited announced a major leadership update today. The company appointed Marcelo Ken Suhara as a Chair Member of its Audit, Risks and Ethics Committee.
Suhara officially stepped into the executive role on July 27, 2026. He currently serves as an independent member of Afya’s Board of Directors. In addition, he retains his ongoing responsibilities as the Audit Committee financial expert.
He succeeds João Paulo Seibel de Faria in leading the Ethics Committee. Faria previously guided the board’s financial and regulatory strategies. However, his recent passing created a critical vacancy on the board.
Afya appreciated Faria for his valuable contributions. The management team acknowledged his dedicated leadership and commitment to corporate governance. The executive team also offered their deepest condolences to Faria’s family and friends.
Governance and Board Composition Improvements
The board transition underscores Afya’s commitment to strong financial compliance. Suhara brings a wealth of industry experience to the Ethics Committee. His dual role will ensure smooth operational uniformity and financial monitoring across all branches of medical education.
Afya uses different leadership styles to improve its decision-making. The company has two co-chairmen on its Board of Directors. One co-chairman represents global media group Bertelsmann SE & Co. KGaA. Meanwhile, the other co-chairman represents the Esteves family.
The board is composed of five non-independent directors and three independent directors in total. The seats are two for the Esteves family and three for Bertelsmann. This multi-layered framework thus provides balanced corporate governance.
Suhara’s appointment as head of the Ethics Committee bolsters Afya’s core mission. The Company remains the leading provider of medical practice solutions in Brazil. Thus, the Ethics Committee provides for high-level oversight for the protection of both investor and institutional interests.
Dedicated to Medical Innovation
Afya remains committed to growing its presence in healthtech and educational segments. Good leadership of the Ethics Committee keeps regulatory compliance in the forefront. Meanwhile, the executive leaders are laser-focused on long-term growth and digital health tools.
The board unanimously endorsed Suhara to chair the Ethics Committee. Afya’s continued growth strategy is matched by his proven financial expertise. Through the newly structured Ethics Committee, the company thus strengthens its transparency.
