Globeleq today announced the executive appointment of Edouard Wenseleers. As of August 10, 2026, he takes up the crucial position of Chief Development Officer (CDO). As such, he is appointed to the Executive Committee to lead the development of the continent.
Wenseleers has more than 15 years of unique experience in the African energy industry. Having joined Globeleq in 2018, he has been consistently contributing to the development of the company’s pipeline in the region. Specifically, he recently served as the Managing Director for Business Development and Head of East Africa.
In his capacity, he managed to lead several significant development and strategic investment initiatives. Moreover, these achievements have ensured Globeleq’s positioning as an energy transition platform in emerging markets. Also, he has been overseeing all of the company’s power assets in Kenya. Wenseleers will be succeeding John Smelcer, who has opted to leave for personal reasons.

Strengthening African Energy Infrastructure
Throughout his tenure at Globeleq, Mr. Wenseleers achieved significant operational and project financing milestones. For example, he played a vital role in reaching financial close for the 52 MWp Malindi Solar project. Similarly, he led the successful financial close of the 35 MW Menengai geothermal project in Kenya.
Additionally, he guided high-value corporate acquisitions across Zambia and East Africa. Notably, he orchestrated the strategic purchase of Norfund’s 51% stake in Lunsemfwa Hydro Power Company. Prior to joining Globeleq, he worked for ten years at ENGIE developing power generation assets in Morocco. Subsequently, he established and managed the East Africa regional office for ENGIE out of Nairobi.
