Chip Skinner’s story begins far from boardrooms and city planning—his early years were marked by financial hardship and frequent moves. Yet through the support of his parents and his own determination, Skinner carved an unlikely path from managing ice cream shops at Twistee Treat to serving as a Governor-appointed board director at Gainesville Regional Utilities Authority (GRUA).
Raised in various U.S. cities, Skinner learned adaptability early on. His entrepreneurial father started the original Twistee Treat, an experience that exposed Chip to business building—but also to the toll it can take on family. When his parents separated, he resolved to approach life with a stronger personal balance.
Earning an English degree from the University of Florida, Skinner initially explored different roles—from restaurants to nonprofit work. But it was in communications that he found his calling. His knack for simplifying complex topics led him to consulting roles, including one with Florida’s Department of Transportation—where a candid, unscripted moment on live TV taught him the value of authenticity in public messaging.
Beyond consulting, Skinner poured his heart into coaching youth lacrosse. He founded Gainesville Area Lacrosse Inc. (GALAXI), coaching and mentoring young athletes for over a decade. For him, it’s less about trophies and more about meaningful impact. “When someone says I helped them, that’s the win,” he reflects.
In 2024, Skinner took on a new role as a GRUA board director, where he collaborates with leadership on critical issues like customer rates and public trust. Drawing from his business, PR, and life experience, he approaches leadership through the lens of integrity, strategy, and service. His method of dividing responsibilities into “Urgent, Semi-Urgent, Normal, and WIGI (When I Get to It)” reflects his grounded, efficient mindset.
Despite his achievements, Skinner remains humble. He credits his drive to his children, granddaughter, and memories of watching family and friends struggle through entrepreneurship. “I don’t chase titles—I chase impact,” he says.
Whether shaping city infrastructure, coaching the next generation, or advising clients, Chip Skinner leads with quiet confidence and a deep sense of purpose. In a fast-moving world, he stands out for staying steady, authentic, and focused on what truly matters.
